Surfing in Aurora

Aurora is a paradise for surfers, with its long Pacific coastline exposed to the Pacific Ocean. The sport was made famous in the Province by the classic film Apocalypse Now. The scene in which U.S. soldiers are surfing was filmed here, and the production crew left behind surfboards for the locals to use. The locals of Baler claim that the surf is sometimes so huge that they could hear it all the way from the provincial capitol building, some 1.5 km away from the coast.
There are numerous surfing points in Aurora, but the municipality of Baler offers most of the more accessible surfing areas with good accommodations.

An array of caves curved along the seaside cliff of Paltic, Dingalan, Aurora. These caves are constantly lured by waves of the Pacific Ocean. The caves would seem deceptively ordinary, however, upon close inspection, delightful natural waterfalls gushes inside from the underground stream. Another cave showers water, giving the impression of an indoor rainstorm. Rare marine lives such as giant turtles and some sharks have been sighted along the location of the caves.

Quezon Memorial Park
(Poblacion, Baler, Aurora). This quiet park of trees and lawns was developed in honor and in memory of the late president Manuel L. Quezon. A marker fenced by concrete and set on a circular cement platform serves as a landmark of Baler, the birthplace of Quezon. Dinadiawan is almost two hours away from Aurora’s capital town, Baler. It is not an easy place to reach since the lone mountain road that leads to it is rough, unpaved and narrow. In contrast to Baler, which is Aurora’s most popular tourist destination, the other parts of the province are remote and desolate, providing visitors with an entirely surreal and different kind of feeling. Many pleasant discoveries can still be experienced and one such place is Dinadiawan which is situated between Luzon’s Sierra Madre Mountain Range & the Pacific Ocean. This place is oftentimes the stopover of buses and commercial vehicles going to northern town of Aurora (Dinalungan, Casiguran, Dilasag) as several small restaurants are lined along the national road.

A few meters from the main road is the stunningly beautiful Dinadiawan Beach. It is a long stretch of clean, fine, golden white sand coastline. There are one to two resorts located in the area but apart from it, no other manmade structure is to be found in the vicinity. It’s best to explore, stroll lazily, camp-out, play ball games, or just enjoy the beach in the late afternoon, when the sun is no longer ferociously beating down on the sandy shoreline. Indeed, there’s a lot to discover and explore in Aurora just like Dinadiawan!

Baler, Aurora - SABANG BEACH

Everytime I have the opportunity to visit Baler, the Sabang Beach did’nt fail to astound me. The ocean, the waves, the shoreline, the mountains - everything just amazes and overwhelms me! Although the sand is gray, it’s really very fine. It is so fine, that you can’t feel any grittiness when you walk along the beach.

While this is a surfer’s beach, the wave here is seasonal. The waves arrive during the months of October to February and are good for first time surfers. However, from March through June, the waves are relatively calm providing a good beachfront for swimmers and an excellent challenge for expert windsurfers.

A new and modern hotel, Bahia de Baler II, can be found few meters from the beach, just few blocks from the more popular Bay’s Inn Resort (see picture below).

Baler, Aurora - Ermita Park

(Zabali, Baler, Aurora). This shrub-covered area provides an excellent view of the town of Baler, Sabang Beach, Cemento and Dimadimalangat islet. It is a short, steep trek from the foot of the hill, through small trees and cogon grass, to the top. Hidden beneath a clump of trees are the almost unrecognizable remains of a bell tower. Owing to its excellent vantage point, the bell tower was formerly used to warn people of Baler of raiding pirates. During sunny days the place is swelteringly hot.

Rainfall
Aurora's climate is characterized by rainfall that is evenly distributed throughout the year, since Aurora faces the Pacific Ocean and has no barriers to shield it from typhoons coming from the east. Tropical cyclones are also a seasonal occurrence.
The average monthly rainfall is 273.9 millimeters. Rainfall is heaviest during the months of January, February, April, October, and November, while August is the driest month.

Wind Current
The province experiences two main wind currents. From November to April, the trade wind generally reaches the province from an easterly direction. The wind then moves in a southwesterly direction for the rest of the year. In Casiguran, the wind comes from the north from October to March and the South from April to September. The average annual wind speed is four knots.

Temperature
The mean monthly temperature of Aurora is 25.3 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are January and February, with a temperature ranging from 19.3 to 20.4 degrees Celsius. The warmest months are from June to July, with temperature from 30 to 33 degrees Celsius.

Cemento Beach

The whole stretch of Cemento Beach is full of white sand, seashells, and crushed corals. From October to February, waves tower up to 14 feet high which is excellent for challenging surfing-much enjoyed by surfing experts from Australia, Japan and other European countries. During the calm season, April to June, the beach is perfect for snorkeling and wall diving.

Getting There and Around

Exploring around would be much more convenient if you have your own vehicle, preferably a high-ground clearance 4x4 one.
Commuting
You can take a bus to Baler via the Genesis bus line (EDSA corner New York Ave., Cubao, QC; Tel No. 632 5510842). The trip takes 6-7 hours. Once in Baler, contact the tourism board and request for suggested tours and your other travel needs.

The province can be accessed from Manila via two routes, the Canili-Pantabangan road and the Baler-Bongabon Road. The former takes a route through the Pantabangan Dam in Nueva Ecija and leads into the town of Maria Aurora then Baler.
The latter route leads up the Sierra Madre Mountains through winding unpaved roads to the town of San Luis and ends in Baler.
If one needs to go to the other towns of the province of Aurora, one can always get off at the Central Terminal in Baler, Aurora and take a jeepney or tricycle to the central aurora towns of San Luis, Dipaculao, Maria Aurora or a non-airconditioned bus (D-Liner) to the northern towns (Dinalungan, Casiguran, and Dilasag). To go to Dingalan, Aurora one has to get off the bus at Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija and take another bus to Dingalan, Aurora.

Air Transportation
SEAIR has 8:00 AM flights from Manila to Baler every Friday and Monday. SEAIR then flies back from Baler to Manila at 9:30 AM.

SEAir planes will actually land on an airfield in San Luis, which is currently maintained and manned by the Philippine Army. It can accommodate light chartered aircraft such as Cessnas, Fokkers, Islanders, Sunrisers and other light planes and helicopters. A flight from Manila takes about 45 minutes. The airfield is only about 20 minutes away by land to Baler.

Another private airstrip is located in Motyong, Casiguran. This is currently being rehabilitated.

Ditumabo Falls - San Luis, Aurora

The crystal clear water of Ditumabo Falls gushes endlessly, flowing and twisting among countless rocks and boulders. The trek to the falls traverses several kilometers through the river and over a few steep mountain trails surrounding the falls on both banks. Occasionally, the trekker will unavoidably come upon fallen or cut logs that serve as either natural bridges or obstacles. The 600-year old Banyan Tree (locally known as Balete Tree) found in Maria Aurora, Aurora measures 50 meters in height and its leaves stretch ¼ hectares wide. Its enormous trunk is equivalent to 62 men formed into a human chain. Because it’s old, the tree’s roots have grown above ground, forming caves under various sections of the trunk.

This long beach has numerous shells and corals scattered along the entire length of its southern half, which is approximately 1-2 kilometers long. The shore is made up of coral reefs that gradually slope into the sea, and a bit farther from the shore is a sudden drop into the sea bottom. This area has a variety of undersea flora and fauna for divers to observe. Brain corals, sea urchins, hermit crabs and even an occasional lobster may be seen in the reef site. The northern half of the beach is of golden white sand and is an excellent place for swimming. The whole white beach area is bordered on the landward side by a long hillcrest with bushes and trees scattered from the foot to the top of the hill. Off-shore coral reef formations provide interesting spots for diving.

Baler, Aurora - Lukso-lukso Islets

(Off the coast of Barangay Zabali, Baler, Aurora) At least three islets comprise the rock formations known to the locals as "Lukso-Lukso." One of these small islands is connected to the mainland and at low tide you can see white grainy sands, crushed corals and numerous seashells, some inhabited by hermit crabs. Here, the last Spanish garrison of four officers and 50 men was besieged by Filipino insurgents from June 27, 1898 to July 2, 1899. Aurora has many prime spots waiting to be discovered by an adventurous scuba diver along the reefs and coral-lined shores. The main snag to the sport is the lack of scuba diving equipment and air compressor units for oxygen tank refilling.
But if you care to bring your own equipment, you may find scuba diving in Aurora to be a most rewarding experience... and you may be among the first divers to explore the untouched reefs in the deeper reaches of the province's coast.

Dive Spots
Experienced scuba divers can generally discover fine diving points on their own, since the most pristine spots are those that remain largely undiscovered. One can also try asking the locals about the best dive areas. Among the diving spots they recommend are:
Off-shore, Borlongan Beach. Two miles off-shore from the beach, a mushroom-shaped coral reef runs more than 150 feet to the bottom.
Baler.The adjacent areas of the Aniao Islets, Cemento Beach, Dimadimalangat Islet, and the Lukso-Lukso Islets are dotted with numerous coral reefs and formations.
Dicasalarin. Discasalarin is full of marvelous coral formations as yet unsullied by dynamite fishers and the general grime of modern civilization.
Also investigate the coral reef off-shore of Casiguran and Dilasag, where many potential diving spots still lie barely explored. The deep waters of Dibut Bay are also home to many species of marine life.

Casiguran is a 3rd class municipality in the northern part of the province of Aurora, Philippines. It is located 121 km from Baler, the provincial capital. It is bounded on the northeast by Dilasag, on the southwest by Dinalungan, on the northwest by Quirino and southeast by the Pacific Ocean.

According to folk legend, the name Casiguran was obtained from the word "Kasiguruhan" which means "safety" or "assurance". Safety means defense/fortress or sanctuary for sailing ships during stormy weather. On the other hand, assurance means that if an unmarried stranger comes to the place, he unavoidably falls in love with someone and eventually gets married and most of the time stayed for good. Casiguran was founded by the Spanish Missionaries on June 13, 1609. But prior to their arrival, the early settlers of the place were the Dumagats/Aetas/Agtas followed by migrants from other places of the country. These migrants spoke different dialects such as Ilokano, Visayan, Bicolano, Pampango. Gaddang, Itawes and Ibanag. Thus, a "kasiguranin" language evolved out of these dialects. A folklore which was never written tells a story about how Dipaculao got its name; long time ago when Ilongots, Dumagats, and Aetas walked through the trails of this place, Dipac, a young Ilongot went to see his friends in their meeting place. They started drinking 'tuba', a coconut sap fermented drink. They were so happy and got drank. Dipac could not walk home without assistance, so his friend helped him go home. Along the way, they met some strangers who were lost on their way to Baler. The strangers ask what is the name of the place. Because Dipac was so drank his friend just replied 'Dipac ulaw' which locally means 'Dipac is dizzy'. From that time on the town was known as Dipaculao.

Dingalan is a 4th class municipality in the province of Aurora, Philippines. It is situated approximately 183 kilometres northeast of Manila. It is bounded on the north by San Luis (in Aurora province), on the west by Gabaldon and General Tinio (Nueva Ecija) and San Miguel (Bulacan), on the south by General Nakar (Quezon), and on the east by the Pacific Ocean.
